IRP Services

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a cooperative agreement among the 48 contiguous United States, the District of Columbia, and participating Canadian provinces. It is a form of commercial truck registration that allows motor carriers to operate legally across multiple jurisdictions using a single apportioned license plate.

With IRP registration, truckers and fleet owners can travel outside their base jurisdiction without the need to purchase separate registration plates for each state or province. Instead, registration fees are apportioned based on the distance traveled in each jurisdiction, simplifying compliance and reducing administrative burden.

An IRP registration can be customized to include the specific states and Canadian provinces in which a vehicle will operate. This flexibility allows carriers to expand or adjust their routes while remaining compliant with regulatory requirements.

The IRP plate is also registered based on the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight, which can be selected according to operational needs, up to a maximum of 80,000 pounds. This ensures that your vehicle is properly registered for the weight it carries, helping to avoid fines, penalties, or operational delays.

IRP registration is mandatory for commercial vehicles that:
  • Travel in two or more jurisdictions
  • Have a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs
  • Have three or more axles, regardless of weight
  • Are used in interstate or cross-border commercial operations

Proper IRP registration helps ensure legal operation, smooth interstate travel, and compliance with transportation authorities
